What's in Defence?
Grapes, apples, kiwi, kale, oregano, shea butter, olive oil, almond oil, avocado oil, vanilla seeds, honey, oat flour, chickpea flour and rice flour
Whilst researching for a mask that fights acne, we found that encouraging cell turnover is paramount. This is because it encourages skin cell growth, allowing a smoother surface and keeping an acne breakout at bay.
Kale
Our choice of Kale in defence was no coincidence, rich in vitamins C,E and K; Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant that brightens your skin’s appearance, minimising dark circles, fine lines and guarding against radicals. Whilst vitamin E – another antioxidant – works with vitamin C to protect against sun damage and pollution . And finally, vitamin K which helps to heal scarring and reduce blemishes on your skin.
That is not all, kale has been noted for its phytonutrient content. These are natural compounds made by plants that guard against external damage. Something that carries over when using it as a skin care ingredient. This is because phytonutrients can prevent your skin from looking puffy as well as contribute to a more even complexion.
Rice, Chickpea and Oat flour
Super fine, nutrient rich organic flours used in both our face masks delivers powerful exfoliation that is gentle on skin. As the fine particles help scrub dead skin cells without being harsh. As well as absorb the excess oil from over active glands that are the cause of acne. In particular chickpea flour has been used for hundreds of years in India to fight acne. For one the presence of zinc in chickpeas mean it regulates the level of bacteria on your skin. Secondly, it reduces excess sebum production, a waxy substance that your skin makes which in high levels encourages dirt and grime clinging to your skin.
Avocado Oil, Olive Oil and Almond Oil
Yet another group of skin-care ingredients used in both our masks, natural oils have been used for generations to achieve healthier, more balanced skin. Avocado oil contains potassium that helps in moisturising the skin. This is what enables avocado to fight acne; when left on for short periods of time and rinsed off, avocado can provide lasting hydration to the skin without leaving any of the oily residue behind that causes acne. It also promotes skin elasticity and collagen synthesis thanks to the high concentration of essential fatty acids found in avocados. Whilst olive oil has been proven by researchers to fight off cancer cells that are caused from exposure to harmful UV rays.
Oregano
The antimicrobial properties of oregano help destroy certain bacteria that can worsen acne, on top of leaving your skin feeling clean and refreshed.
Honey
Honey is a revered skin care ingredient thanks to its antiseptic properties, especially for oily skin that is prone to acne. It balances the bacterial content of your skin and acts as a humectant, which means it helps keep your skin moist but not oily as it draws moisture from your skin without replacing it. Not to mention its a natural exfoliator that eliminates dead skin cells that give your skin a dull look, revealing new skin cells underneath that make your skin look bright and healthy.
Apples
Apples possess an unusually long list of benefits for your skin, leading us to incorporate it into both our masks. Apples, among other things; hydrate your skin thanks to its high water content, protects against UV rays, reduces acne and blemishes and corrects uneven skin tone by regulating its Ph balance.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is the key ingredient to achieving softer, more supple skin. Due to shea butter’s emollient properties, this means it locks in moisture by creating a seal over the skin. This in tandem with anti-inflammatory properties makes it a popular treatment for skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

Mango
So delicious that it is one of the most consumed fruits in the world. Mangoes also have a slew of benefits for your skin. It’s a great source of vitamins: E, A and C which all act as antioxidants for your skin, in particular vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen which gives your skin its structure. While vitamin A can reduce the risk of acne as a deficiency in vitamin A can lead to clogged hair follicles that stimulates glands to produce more oil and thus lead to a potential acne breakout. Finally both vitamin C and E work together to reduce the affects of dull, ageing skin; as they protect against excess exposure to pollution and sunlight.
